our History and Who We serve

Following the 2023 season, TSSAA Volleyball Supervisors completed a survey of the Columbia Association and MTVA. The results indicated that change was needed to cover the growing landscape for volleyball officials in Middle Tennessee. These changes included creating a new association in Southeastern Middle Tennessee, shifting county assignments between SWVA, MTVA, and South Central Associations. These changes were intended to reduce travel time to matches and improve overall officiating quality.

As we headed into the 2024 volleyball season the Columbia Volleyball association adopted a new name that better reflects our service area along with a new mission statement. The new association name is the Southwest Volleyball Association and will service 7 counties. SWVA will keep 6 counties from the Columbia Volleyball Association and add 1 new county. The counties serviced are Williamson, Maury, Giles, Lawrence, Wayne, Perry, and Lewis.

SWVA is committed to the education, training, and assigning of high-quality volleyball officials for MS & HS volleyball. We strive to raise and maintain the level of officiating through an official’s training program and mentor/mentee program for new officials.

The Southwest Volleyball Association is lead by Assigner Brett Whaley and Training Coordinator Steve Channell. Brett and Steve came to SWVA from the Middle Tennessee Volleyball Association. They possess many years of officiating experience. Brett was selected to the TSSAA State Tournament in 2023 as a referee and 2013 as a line judge. Steve was selected to the TSSAA State Tournament in 2025 as a referee and 2016 as a line judge.
